I’m going to let you in on a little secret. This is something I try to “live by” whenever I’m shopping or on the hunt for new clothes (which is basically always). I have a few factors that each item must pass.
- Is it on SALE? Seriously. I know it’s silly. But there is something in my brain that stops me in my tracks from buying something unless it is on sale. Hello, justification! My husband makes so much fun of me whenever I try to justify “saving money” when something is on sale. His argument: you are still SPENDING. Can anyone else NOT relate to his mentality?! LOL. Honestly, I try to stick to this as much possible, but don’t get me wrong, I definitely make exceptions every now and then.
- Do I feel comfortable in it? There is nothing worse than walking out the door in an outfit to find out minutes later (aka after its already too late to change) that you are just NOT comfortable in what you’re wearing. Whether that is the fit, the material, or just being too far out of your comfort zone, the end result is all the same; I cannot wait to get home and change. Yuck. Talk about a perfect day ruiner. When I try something on, I try to give it more than just a quick glance and actually move around in it to see how I really feel in it. If something is too low cut in the front and too short or tight on the bottoms and I know I’m going to be tugging on it all day, I pass on it.
- Can I think of at least 2-3 ways I would style this item? Ok so this isn’t going to work for every single item, for instance, dresses usually don’t give you too much leeway outside of shoes & accessories, but for separates, I definitely want to know that I’m only going to wear something one way and then let it sit in my closet collecting dust. I do not like to repeat outfits often (or ever, haha, I know…I’m working on this!!) so being able to mix and match with other pieces to create different looks is a must for me.
One thing I love to buy (especially now in the warmer months) is a two-piece set. I take it as a personal challenge to see just how many ways I can style the separates to get a full rotation of different looks. This two-piece set has become one of my favorites lately! I’m already thinking of other ways to wear them separately to create even more looks.
