Tula Skincare Review – My Honest Feelings
If you spend any time at all on Instagram, you’ve probably seen the influx of influencers raving about Tula skincare products. Finding a good skincare routing has become increasingly important to me ever since I crossed into my 30’s. I truly wish I would have taken better care of my skin in my teens & 20’s, but hindsight is 20/20!
I started using the Tula skincare line in April 2019 for about five months, ended up switching to a different skincare line, and then switched back to Tula in early 2020 and have been using ever since.
Needless to say, I have spent a decent amount of time using the products and wanted to share my honest Tula Skincare review in 2021! There are some products I really love, and some that I don’t care for (gasp! but I said this was an honest review).
It is important to mention that I am an affiliate for Tula now, having used their products and loved so many for multiple years. However, I promise I still give my honest opinion! And if you do want to try to use Tula, you can save money using my discount code (but no pressure)!
As I mentioned, I had been seeing a LOT of people talking about the Tula line in the past few years, which is a probiotic skincare line. I’m sure you’ve heard of probiotics in the form of gut health. They are good bacteria that help to improve your health.
According to Tula, these same bacteria are also proven to promote the look of the skin’s natural balance, just as it would your stomach.
Since I’m a total sucker for buzzwords, I heard probiotic and was immediately intrigued and after months of hearing others rave about it, I decided to give it a go.
Tula Skincare Review: What Tula products I purchased originally
One thing I loved was that there is a Tula Skincare Discovery Kit. This allows you to sample multiple products (in smaller sizes, think travel-sized) to get to know the products before committing to the larger, full-size products (which are purchased a la carte).
At the time of starting Tula Skincare, there were two Tula starter kits to choose from: Tula Discovery Kit, and the Anti-Aging Discovery Kit. I decided to try the Tula Discovery Kit, because it contains their best selling products, including the Skin Illuminating Serum which I had been wanting to try due to raving reviews.
However, now there are so many Tula kits to choose from based on different skin types, products of interest, and limited edition kits.
It came in a cute carrying case, along with four products: Tula Purifying Face Cleanser, Tula Pro-Glycolic Resurfacing Toner, Tula Illuminating Serum, and finally the Tula Hydrating Day & Night Cream.
My First Impression of Tula products
As I mentioned, I’ve always heard that you need to give it at least 30 days to truly let your skin adapt when trying out a new skincare routine. With previous routines I’ve tried, my skin had a tough time in the beginning weeks (think: major breakouts). And while they say this can be “normal” it is so annoying, am I right? I am happy to let you know that Tula did not cause me any breakouts, not even in the first few days, so I was pretty impressed with it to start.
Additionally, the scent is very pleasant and the products didn’t seem overly heavy, which is important to me since I have combination skin that leans slightly more towards the oily side.
And while I didn’t specifically seek out whether or not Tula is considered a good skincare routine for oily skin, I was pleasantly surprised that it did not make me feel overly oily like so many other moisturizers can.
How I used the Tula Discovery Kit
I tried as much as possible to follow this routine daily, although I must admit, I did miss some days. I started out with the cleanser, followed by the resurfacing toner, illuminating serum, then finished up with the moisturizer all before applying my makeup for the day.
It is recommended to use cotton balls or pads to apply the serum, but I used my fingertips. I don’t love using cotton pads to apply product because I feel like it soaks up too much product, and you aren’t getting as much as when you use your fingers. At night, I would remove the middle two steps, and just cleanse my face with the cleanser, applying the hydration cream last.
Fast forward to now, and I use the full size products because I love the product line. They do last me quite a while, so while it might feel like a big investment, the products do go a long way. Not only do I use the core four products daily, I’ve added quite a few more products (ok, almost all of them) to my vanity and I’m here to share what I like and don’t necessarily love about them.
Tula Skincare Review: Additional Tula Products I Love
Now in 2022, Tula has come out with so many different products, and they have even crossed over into body care. As I mentioned, I have tried just about all of the products – here are the ones I truly love.
Tula Face wash
Its called the cult classic and I must admit I’m a proud member of that cult club. With the Tula face wash, you don’t need to use a ton of product – it lathers well with just a bit of water and leaves skin feeling refreshed and with a very subtle yet healthy glow. Of all of the Tula products, this seems to just last forever!
Tula Moisturizer
In the past few months, Tula has released a new acne moisturizer, but since my skin is not typically prone to breakouts, I use the 24/7 Moisturizing cream as part of both my morning and nighttime skincare routines. It is light weight and doesn’t leave me feeling oily (which is important because I do tend to have oily skin).
Tula Facemasks
I honestly love all of the Tula face masks that I’ve tried. To date, I have tried 3 out of four masks including the So Smooth resurfacing mask, the Claydate Detoxing and Toning Mask, and the Self-care Sunday nourishing face mask. Of the three, my two favorites are the Claydate and the Self-care Sunday.
Claydate is a roll-on stick that honestly smells SO good and feels velvety. It helps to draw out dirt & excess oil without drying out skin.
The Self-care Sunday mask “gives new life to even the most parched, dull & distressed skin” and has the prettiest, iridescent sheen when applied to skin. I leave on for 15 minutes and usually get some work done (such as blog about christmas gifts for teachers), wipe off with a warm wet washcloth, then massage the rest into skin. It truly leaves a beautiful glow!
With any of the Tula face masks, I just make sure to avoid my eyes and eyelash extensions.
Tula Primers
The filter primer is one of my favorite Tula products! It comes in 5 different shades, one of which is universal (and also the one I use). It has a beautiful sheer golden illuminating effect, creating a radiant base for makeup that is “filter-like”. This is definitely the product I go through the quickest. I have also tried the brightening primer, but prefer the filter primer, as the brighten up primer is a gel base and I prefer the consistency and pump of the filter primer.
Tula Skincare Review: Tula Products I Don’t Love or No Longer Use
I told you this was going to be an honest Tula Skincare review, so I must share the good, the bad and the just ok. And while overall, I like the brand and so many of their products, not everything is always a great fit, am I right?
Tula Lip Balm
I really did not care for the Tula Lip SOS lip treatment balm. These come in .28 oz tubes in a variety of shades and at first I was excited to try. I knew right off the bat I wouldn’t like two of the shades just due to personal preference, but tried the blushing lemonade shade, as it was the lightest of the original line.
As soon as I applied to my lips for the first time, I felt it was overly sticky (I guess I prefer more of a chapstick than balm). A day or two later after wearing the lip balm, my lips started peeling uncontrollably. I just did not like this and haven’t used it since. However, I know some people love it, even Christina Milian partnered with Tula to create her own limited edition lip balm.
Tula Eye Balm
Next up in my honest Tula Skincare review – another product I don’t really care for. The Rose Glow and Get it Eye Balm is one of the best selling products and has a cult following on social media, but I felt the “rose” tint is a little overwhelming. I much prefer the original. I do like the cooling and brightening aspects of both, just prefer a little more subdued glow than the Rose stick provides.
Tula Makeup Melt
The makeup melt is one that I’m 50/50 on. I honestly do not love the sensation of the “melt” but I think it is very convenient for travel purposes. Essentially you roll this balm on your face, then wipe or cleanse away. For an every day item this is a no for me, but I have definitely used it while traveling to cut down on space and items in my luggage. One thing I do is make sure to avoid my eyelashes, to preserve my eyelash extensions and cut down risk of losing them prematurely.
Tula Sunscreen
The Protect & Glow sunscreen is another product that I’ve used, and I really did like it, however, I no longer use it as my daily sunscreen. Sometimes, you can have a bit too much glow. And that was the case with this. Once I started using the filter primer that has a glow to it, I felt like my face was too glowy using both products. Plus I wanted more SPF (Tula has SPF 30), so switched to this sunscreen instead that has SPF 46.
Tula Skincare Review Conclusion
Overall, I truly love almost all of the Tula skincare line! The products are lightweight, have no or very light scent, and are probiotics so they are good for your skin. As I mentioned, I like that even though you’re applying multiple products they seem lightweight and didn’t make me look oily. I do not suffer from acne so I cannot speak to how well their acne line works.
Did it change my skin? The verdict is still out here. While I don’t think it was as dramatic as I’ve heard other bloggers mention, I do notice that the appearance of my skin does seem better overall. I am more comfortable going out without a full face of makeup on if that tells you anything! Do I feel like my skin is perfect now? No. But I don’t know that I’ll ever achieve perfect skin just due to my genetics and without botox (yes I get this) and laser treatments (have yet to try any).
Would I recommend Tula skincare? Yes! I truly love the products. If you’re on the fence about what to purchase when just starting out, I definitely recommend the discovery kit. I like that they are small and won’t take up a ton of room when we travel (because lord knows I need all the space for clothes and shoes and hair product that I can get). Plus, I really just liked all of these products!
I originally was on the fence on whether or not to try the discovery kit or the anti-aging discovery kit, but I am happy with the products I use currently.
